Thanks to [info]cerval, I got to wondering just how long I've been in this place. So I did some back hunting through my archives...

My first post was on 10 July 2001...

I started actively posting, almost daily, on 17 October 2001.

I've been here for almost 7 years.[1]

DAAYUM!

How long have you folks been around???

[1]Easy to remember because its pretty much as long as the Beloved and I have been together

Sorry this has taken so long, I got distracted with life and then hit a writers block *grump*

The King thought on this for a while. The idea of having a mistling that could fight what was attacking the outlaying lands was very appealing, but the risk. Mistlings were dangerous...and yet this one isn't quite a Mistling. The King looked at Yerd who could barely contain his excitement, then at the Sharwin determined to follow his code even at high personal cost, and finally at the young girl standing before him.

"You would prefer to die rather than abuse this power of yours, yes child?"

Gesh nodded, "If I could control this power I would use it to help you, but I know of no one to teach that control. We killed all the Mistlings."

Yerd hummed. "Sire, it is possible that the Academy in Ranthem could teach her."

The King looked startled, "You'd send a Mistling into that large a city? An uncontrolled power?"

Yerd frowned, "Well, we do send our young scholars there to learn to unlock and control their magic ability. And they have the library!" Yerd's eyes lit up, "They've a whole library of old documents, trinkets, and other things recovered from Mistling villages. I'm sure they'd know something. We know power can be controlled, our histories talk of the mistlings and their powers. But there is nothing I learned on how to control that power."

Galyn interrupted, "Her life is forfeit."

The King considered the Sharwin for a moment, "I agree that by your code her life is forfeit."

Gesh flinched slightly and closed her eyes.

"But would your code allow you to travel with her to Ranthem to see if she can be trained."

Galyn frowned, "I don't know. This is not a situation the code forsaw. The code requires me to kill her for being a Mistling and yet you argue that she is a meld of Sharwin and Mistling. Were she to have a conscience, then I might consider waiting. But we have no guarantee that this Mistling will not destroy more lives."

"But you do have one in a sense," the voice at the edge of the dais drew everyone's attention. The High Priest looked at Gesh, "I don't exactly know what you did or how you did it, but you've been in the corner of my thoughts for several days now. And today, I saw what you would have done and asked you the right question that you broke free of the power." Turning to Galyn, "Is that not enough of a guarantee?"

The King protested, "Faulk, you can't just go traipsing off to Rantham. You have duties as High Priest."

"I resign." Everyone looked taken aback and Faulk smiled as he took of the conical headgear that went with his post. "I am linked to her now. Even were I to stay, I would be. I'd rather go and see if it is possible to redeem a Mistling."

Galyn and Faulk stared at each other for a bit before Galyn nodded, "That is enough. I will go with them, but should she prover dangerous, I will kill her."

Something inside Gesh relaxed and as she half-turned to smile at Galyn, she felt power and a word swirling around her. It felt similar to what had happened to her with Faulk and she fought it. She would not charm another without their consent. As she faught this battle, Yerd commented to the King, "They need a scholar with them. One who can record this journey. I would send my student Joramy with them. He might slow them down a bit, but he knows as much as I do about the Yardryn War and those involved."

The King nodded, "They also need a guide. There is no way I will send them via the Mernan Path. It may be the safest and best way through the Spine from Landen to Ranthem, but it is too risky. Too many people and too many villages. I will have someone take them over the Spine on another route. Devris, take them out to my cabin where their guide will meet them."

The King then looked at Galyn, Gesh, and Faulk, "Good luck to you. Joramy will join you shortly."

Note, this will keep showing up in short bits (what I can get written out in 30 minute breaks during work). I will continue to put it behind a text; am debating filtering it...but right now it is public.

Hmm, how does one copyright one's writing on the web?

I WILL be participating in this strike!

The one-day content strike is on for this Friday, March 21, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT.

For 24 hours, we will not post or comment to LJ. Not in our own journals, not in communities. Not publicly, privately, or under friends-lock.

This is a protest that will have long-lasting effects, showing up forever in the daily posting statistics.

This is a protest that will not harm LJ in the long run, as leaving LJ might do.

This is a protest that will demonstrate the power of community, as all users unite to support Basic users and the concept of adfree space.

This is a protest that will educate the new owners that LJ is driven by user-created content.

How Can I Help?

DO post about this in your own LJ.
DO post and comment about it in appropriate communities.
DO remember that it's based on Greenwich Mean Time, which may not be your local time.
DO turn off LoudTwitter and your RSS feeds for 24 hours.
DO feel free to friend me for updates, and defriend when the strike is over.

DON'T forget to get permission from community mods before making an off-topic post or comment about the strike.
DON'T be spammy with your posts or comments about the strike.
DON'T forget to turn your LoudTwitter and RSS feeds back on when the strike is over
We are holding the Content Strike because we want to demonstrate that LiveJournal is content-driven.

We are holding the Content Strike because we want the new owners of LiveJournal to better understand the power and resolve of the LJ Community of Users.

We are holding the Content Strike because all of us, Paid, Permanent and Plus users as well as Basic, want to demonstrate our solidarity as a Community of Users. We do not consider Basic users to be freeloaders, we consider them to be valuable content-providers and Friends.

We are holding the Content Strike because we ache to do something to show our displeasure, and commenting on the news post -- even with cat macros -- just isn't powerful enough!

The strike has four terms:

1. Restore basic accounts for new account creation.

2. Inform users before any change to the site that affects how we use the site or demands on our resources.

3. Run change proposals by the Advisory Board and take their advice into account before implementation of any change.

4. Homophobia, misogyny, and racism must not be a part of the decision making processes about appropriate content of the site, including what user interests are deemed appropriate.

NOTE: We're aware that there may be good business decisions for eliminating Basic accounts. If Basic accounts are to be eliminated, though, that action should be taken only after approval of the Advisory Board and consultation with the LJ Community of Users.

To find out exactly when the strike begins and ends, depending on where you are located, please see this:

I do not and have not celebrated Valentines Day for a very long time. Every year I get stared at and asked why not?

My thought is simply that I don't need a single day during the year to celebrate loving my others, I do that every day of the year. If I want to celebrate that relationship, then I do so on anniversaries. I'll skip over the commercialization of holidays and relation of this holiday to my Birthday for the moment. I just don't see why February 14th is an important holiday to celebrate.

So, I'm very curious. Why do you or don't you celebrate Valentines Day?

I've been thinking a lot about the 2008 Presidential Election. I usually ignore what is going on right now because I seriously dislike the two years of pre-election campaigning. If I get involved and pay attention now, then I'm all worn out and don't care by the time the election actually rolls around. But I've been thinking about this ever since Senator Clinton announced her bid.

I'm not opposed to a woman as President. I'm not necessarily opposed to Clinton as a person. I am opposed to her running for and likely getting the Democratic Presidential Nomination.

Why?

Because I am opposed to turning the United States of America into an Oligarchy[1]. The past three presidents have been George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and now George W. Bush. If Hillary Clinton runs for and wins the Presidency, then this list would be Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton. And just two families will have controlled the highest office in the United States for 24 years. At that point, the United States ceases as a representative democracy.

I'm an Independent. I vote for whomever I think will do the best job. In this case, I'm very scared that the Democratic Party will nominate Clinton and I'll be voting for a Republican not because they'll do a good job, but because I don't want an Oligarchy. So to any Democrats out there, I ask that you seriously consider if you want an Oligarchy before you vote for Clinton in the presidential primaries.

[1] An Oligarchy is a form of government where political power effectively rests with a small elite segment of society (whether distinguished by wealth, family or military powers).

The kittens really don't like the Vaccuum cleaner. I cleaned this weekend and they sniffed it initially, but ran and hid when I turned it on. Of course once they got bold they stood very far away and hissed at it. *shake* Poor kittens.

I learned that they associate darkness with sleep and light with play - because I was awake Sunday Morning around 2 am and they played like maniacs. *shake* They also learned _not_ to play with the rockers on the rocking chair (probably cause Muffet won't let them anywhere near the bed).

This morning they decided to follow the human into the shower. *giggle* Poor wet kitty. But it was funny.

The only good bits (and bad bits) are that the Kittens will now sleep on the pillows next to my head.

Note - this is from almost 6 years ago...I don't have those kittens anymore and Muff crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 2004

The Price of Children.
The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 and came up with $160,140 for a middle income family.

Talk about sticker shock! That doesn't even touch college tuition.

But $160,140 isn't so bad if you break it down.

It translates into
* $8,896.66 a year,
* $741.38 a month, or
* $171.08 a week.
* That's a mere $24.24 a day!
* Just over a dollar an hour.

Still, you might think the best financial advice is don't have children if you want to be "rich."

Actually, it is just the opposite.

What do you get for your $160,140?
* Naming rights. First, middle, and last!
* Glimpses of God every day.
* Giggles under the covers every night.
* More love than your heart can hold.
* Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs.
* Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies.
* A hand to hold, usually covered with jelly or chocolate.
* A partner for blowing bubbles and flying kites.
* Someone to laugh yourself silly with, no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed that day.

For $160,140, you never have to grow up. You get to
* finger-paint,
* carve pumpkins,
* play hide-and-seek,
* catch lightning bugs, and
* never stop believing in Santa Claus.

You have an excuse to
* keep reading the Adventures of Piglet and Pooh,
* watching Saturday morning cartoons,
* going to Disney movies, and
* wishing on stars.
* You get to frame rainbows, hearts, and flowers under refrigerator magnets and collect spray painted noodle wreaths for Christmas, hand prints set in clay for Mother's Day, and cards with backward letters for Father's Day.

For $160,140, there is no greater bang for your buck.

You get to be a hero just for
* retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof,
* taking the training wheels off a bike,
* removing a splinter,
* filling a wading pool,
* coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs,
* and coaching a baseball team that never wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless.

You get a front row seat to history to witness the
* first step,
* first word,
* first bra,
* first date, and
* first time behind the wheel.

You get to be immortal.

You get another branch added to your family tree, and if you're lucky, a long list of limbs in your obituary called grandchildren and great grandchildren.

You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match.

In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there under God.

You have all the power to heal a boo-boo, scare away the monsters under the bed, patch a broken heart, police a slumber party, ground them forever, and love them without limits.

So… one day they will, like you, love without counting the cost.

That is quite a deal for the price!!

Love & enjoy your children & grandchildren and all the little ones in your life!!

If you really want to read my journal and are not on my friends list, please let me know. This will not affect my reading because as part of the whole lack of net time, I am creating two reading filters. One is a filter that I will check daily to keep up with people I want to keep close and continuing contact with. The other one will be checked on weekends only. Fair warning that if I loose the time, the weekend filter will not be checked very often.

Love

Love is what happens when two people feel a strong affinity towards each other, for a variety of reasons, social, mental, spiritual, or sexual. The latter is kinda rare around here, but with VX technology getting better every day, it shouldn't be long now.
The mental and spiritual aspects are the ones more frequently dealt with on Dreamshadow, and have the added bonus of not requiring a trip to your friendly gynecologist or urologist. Should love happen to you or someone you know, DON'T PANIC! Look for the following warning signs:

5.) Desire to spend lots and lots of time with one person.
4.) Glazed or dreamy expression.
3.) Complaints by friends about disgusting amounts of cuteness in your general vicinity.
2.) Rictus-like smiling and general happiness at the thought/mention/sight of one person.
1.) Embarassment and vehemenent denial of such feelings towards one person, accompanied by stammering and brain-death near that same person.

IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW EXHIBITS THESE WARNING SIGNS it is imperative that they be treated for immediately! Talk to that person, being as open and honest as humanly possible and tell them how you feel about them. You might be surprised. Either way, it's the best game in town.

Final thought: There can be no true love without friendship.

Also, they are definitely both male. The shelter currently has no kittens, so they shouldn't be hard to place. It was requested that whomever takes them, keeps them together.

Before they left though....

They found the tail end of a sleeve of saltine crackers. It became the latest evil. They pounced on it, carried it around in their mouth, fought over it, and generally made a mess. Also, pink nose got rather annoyed at the bed when the bedpost was in between it and the saltines.

When I cleaned Saturday, they still hated the vacuum cleaner - but this time they crawled onto the bed with Muff instead of hiding. Those silly kits.

I do miss them. I think Muff misses them. I got home last night and she "Meowed" at me until I petted her for a good while and then last night had to curl on me. This morning, she kept "mrowing" at me. Its better this way, I could've kept them, but the apartment isn't big enough and my allergies would have been terrible.

They were cute, though.

I've had these two wretches for almost a month now. They're adorable and horrid at the same time. I've had to kitten proof my apartment, deal with shredded paper and kleenex. Tossing the cat litter twice a week vs once. Getting licked at 3 am because one or the other wants me awake and wants petting.

In a small way I've bonded with these adorable monsters. And tomorrow, the friend who origionally asked me to care for them while he was away may be coming to take them to a shelter. For all the headaches, I'm going to miss those two.

Especially curled up with me for warmth while purring...

Ever tried moving cats (or kittens) in a direction they don't want to go? I finally decided the easiest way was to pick them up and toss them in the direction I wanted them to go. This has created a new game of "kitten tossing"...usually done late at night (or very early in the am) when I need to sleep and they think I should be awake. Usually after two or three tosses off the bed - each - they realize to let the human sleep. This doesn't say anything about them needing to attack my feet moving under the covers before curling into a ball for sleep.

And have you ever tried tying shoes when there's a kitten trying to play with your shoelaces? I have. *looks at kitten claw marks on fingers*

Last night, pink nose got up onto the chair and was trying to figure out who the kitten was in the TV screen. They are so perplexed by reflections...

And they love bran muffins. Or maybe they just like the butter on the muffin :) but they go nutz every morning trying to get at my breakfast.

Silly kittens.

If they weren't so cute, they'd be dead. Especially after the mess they've made of any papers lying around. But yesterday they redeemed themselves - I was home sick and they spent the day curled up on or near me purring. Ever noticed how warm a little bundle of fur is?? I didn't until I had both on my lap sleeping while I played on the computer. Nice warm kittens.

Oh yeah, they're fascinated by the computer. They don't understand the white thing that moves and these things that appear and then change. They pawed at the screen, but didn't understand why they could see into it, but couldn't get at the things on the screen. =)

Those two...

I realized when I crawled out of bed this morning that they're only pests and they only insist on waking me up at 4 in the morning when their food dish is empty. However, I think they got the point of 'leave me alone' when I tossed them halfway across the room off my bed after waking me for the 5th time. Of course I can't tell which kitten it is in the dark...

I also figured out to get them to leave me alone in the shower I just have to splash them with a little water and they run. Although they still lick the water out of the bottom when I'm done. Silly kittens.

They've also decided paper is evil. I have to finish my filing this weekend or I won't be able to find half the paperwork that was set to be filed. *shudder*

Oh well...time to kitten-proof my apartment this weekend.

The kittens have decided socks are evil to and must be played with, pounced on, and carried around the house like a trophy for all the world to see what evil they have captured.

They're also a demolitions crew. I'm going to tell the friend that gave them to me to find a home for that he has to come help me clean this weekend. The books are all over the floor again; they've taken to ripping apart boxes; and playing with cords/cables. If I've got to watch them much longer, I need help getting my house organized to deal with kittens.

I had to shower last night...they decided to play in the bathroom. They kept playing between the curtains - at least until one of them fell into the shower. *giggle* Poor wet kitty. But it was funny.

The only good bits (and bad bits) are that the Kittens will now sleep on the bed with Muffet. I just need to train them not to sleep on the pillows next to my head.

The kittens and Muff have finally started adjusting to each other. Except that pink nose decided Muff's tail was a toy and got swatted good for trying to bite it. Black nose actually curled up with Muff last night on the bed - was awful cute. In fact for part of the night all three were sleeping on the bed. (Doesn't do my allergies any good, but hey...)

One thing I need to break them of is chewing or playing with the cables/cords on the Entertainment Center (*laugh* fancy name for my TV, VCR, and Playstation) and on the Computer. They pulled the mouse off the desk one night playing with the cord. Silly kittens.

They also keep pulling my kleenex out of the box and playing with them...kleenex are evil, must hunt the kleenex.

Oh yeah and Shoes! Shoes are just bad things, must be chewed on - stalked - batted at. I'm sure if mine were big enough, they'd crawl into them (they tried that with a friend). So far they havn't been able to untie the Doc Martins, but they're having a blast with my heeled boot shoes.

*shake* They also learned _not_ to play with the rockers on the rocking chair when I'm sitting in it rocking. Of course that doesn't mean they didn't enjoy jumping in my lap to be rocked.

By the way, kitten speak for "pet me" is to follow me around, rub against my legs and "meow" at me. Until I pet them. Then they purr...that whole vibrating body purr. Once (note, only once, per kitten) they tried to climb my legs to get me to pet them. They quickly learned that was not an option.

Of course if I'm sleeping then they climb up on the bed and lick either my nose or chin until I wake and pet them. They like licking the hand that is petting them, that one I don't get.

They really enjoy that I moved the cat tower to the middle of the room. One jumps on top and then they play King of the Tower. Or hide and seek with it.

So far Muffet is ignoring them unless they bother her and then she hisses at them. They've learned not to try eating her food, but they still drink from her water dish.

Oh and they don't like sleeping on just the area rugs...they prefer a pillow or even one of my t-shirts between them and my floor. Probably cause my floor is cold!! But its funny...

Last night when I got home, Muff was sitting in the corner of the kitchen on the kitchen rug. The kittens come running to see the human and she starts hissing. I'm wondering if she spent the day sitting in that corner. Her food was untouched.

The kittens however had eaten everything and were playing...

They still enjoy climbing the rocking chair, in fact they've learned to stand on top of it while its moving (at least for a little bit). And its they're all time favorite play toy (fight through, jump off, etc) and they're preferred sleeping space is under it.

Last night they were pouncing on a cricket that made it under the front door. Strange...they didn't get too upset with I tossed it back outside. They just found something else to play.

They also found the cat tower I had in a corner, bought for Muff, but she never uses it. They love it. Clawing their way up to the top, running inside...they're just crazy. I havn't seen one sleep on it yet.

This morning they went through the shower routine again. I guess they didn't learn yesterday - of course today they let me get in alone, but started pawing at it shortly after. I open a corner and heads pop in. The pink nosed one actually jumped in again and dashed back out. Of course once I was done showering they crawled in and started to lick the water off the floor of the stall.

Oh and while I was in the shower they figured out how to tip the wastebasket over. They were playing with the kleenex/q-tips when I got out. Suffice to say before I left for work, I emptied the wastebins.

I have a pile of books on the floor where they've been knocked off...and had a candle tipped over and broke the glass. But so far so good.
